From Table to Tide: Celebrating 29 Million Oysters Recycled in Alabama

There’s something special about enjoying fresh Gulf oysters along the Alabama coast. But what happens after the last shell is emptied? Thanks to the Oyster Shell Recycling Program, those shells are getting a second life—and making a massive impact. Today, we’re proud to celebrate a major milestone: Over 29 million oyster shells collected and recycled across Alabama.

What Is the Oyster Shell Recycling Program?

Launched in 2016 by the Alabama Coastal Foundation, the Oyster Shell Recycling Program partners with local restaurants to collect used oyster shells and return them to Alabama waters.

Instead of ending up in landfills, these shells are:

Collected from participating restaurants
Cleaned and cured over time
Placed back into coastal waters to help form new oyster reefs

This simple but powerful process helps:

Grow new oysters
Improve water quality
Provide habitat for marine life
Reduce shoreline erosion

Why Oyster Shells Matter

SiriusXM today announced country music icon Kenny Chesney will deliver an exclusive SiriusXM concert at the equally iconic beach bar, Flora-Bama, located where the two states meet at Orange Beach, Alabama and Perdido Key, Florida line. The Saturday, April 18 show is a special performance to celebrate 10 years of Chesney’s exclusive SiriusXM channel, No Shoes Radio.

The sun, sand, and stellar music of Gulf Shores will be taking a brief hiatus in 2026. Yesterday, city officials and Mayor Robert Craft confirmed the disappointing news that the beloved Hangout Music Festival will not be held next year, though organizers and the city are already fully focused on a triumphant return in 2027.

While the cancellation is certainly a letdown for fans and local businesses that rely on the massive economic boost, the decision appears to be less about a failure and more about a commitment to quality and thoughtful planning.

The Official Line: A Compressed Timeline

The primary reason for the 2026 pause, according to Mayor Craft’s statement, comes down to a simple matter of logistics and time.

The festival’s initial 10-year franchise agreement with the city was scheduled to end after the 2025 event. The Gulf Shores City Council elected to wait until late July to approve a two-year extension, only doing so after evaluating the 2025 festival and gathering overwhelming positive input from the community.

However, moving into late summer, festival producers found themselves with an insufficient "runway" to secure the necessary artists and finalize the extensive planning required to deliver a world-class event for 2026. Rather than rushing a subpar festival, the organizers made the mature choice to step back for a year. As Mayor Craft noted, all parties are committed to planning a “strong and well-executed music festival.”

Commitment to Quality and Community

The timing issue aside, the city has made it clear that maintaining the Hangout Festival’s reputation for top-tier talent is paramount. During the City Council meeting, officials emphasized that they are raising the bar and won’t allow the festival to regress to earlier, less-impactful lineups.

This push for quality aligns with the city's broader goal: ensuring the festival remains a massive economic driver—drawing tens of thousands of attendees and generating millions—while simultaneously addressing key community concerns. Over the years, Gulf Shores residents have raised issues regarding noise, traffic, and public safety.

The 2025 event, which was successfully rebranded as the "Sand in My Boots" event, served as a proof-of-concept. It sold out quickly and attracted a reportedly "more mature and well-behaved crowd," suggesting that organizers are taking community feedback about the festival experience seriously.

Looking Ahead to a Strong 2027

Ultimately, the 2026 cancellation is not a sign of the festival ending, but rather a temporary setback in pursuit of excellence. The event is already approved for 2027, and organizers now have over a year and a half to meticulously plan the lineup and logistics.

For fans of the music and the beach-side atmosphere, while 2026 will feel quieter than usual, the extra planning time promises an even better, more impactful festival when the Hangout returns to Gulf Shores in May 2027. Cleaning the Beach for Alabama Coastal Cleanup

Flora-Bama is a proud supporter of Alabama Coastal Cleanup and lend our support every year to be a host site for beach cleanup. Since 1987, over 110,000 volunteers have helped protect Alabama’s coast through this program, and this year, YOU made a difference! Thank you to everyone who came out on September 20 to keep our beaches and waterways beautiful.

Alabama’s Coastal Cleanup isn’t just about pollution cleanup — it’s also about pollution prevention. The event focuses on educating and empowering people to become a part of the marine debris solution. What makes the Alabama Coastal Cleanup unique is its data collection component. Volunteers record specific types of marine debris being found, allowing Ocean Conservancy, sponsor of the International Coastal Cleanup, to compile, analyze and track this data year-by-year and make discoveries about the behaviors that cause the debris. The final information is used to educate the public, business, industry, and government officials about the problem. We believe understanding the problem is the key to finding long-lasting solutions. During last year’s cleanup, 2,470 dedicated volunteers removed 21,695 pounds of debris from the coastal area.

Red Snapper season falls in the Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo dates for 2025

The fishing season everyone wants to know about.... Red Snapper. For the past few years, the season for catching this delicious Gulf fish has been a topic of intense conversation among local fisherman and tourists coming to the area to fish. The 2025 Red Snapper seasons for both Alabama and Florida have been announced and both fall in our Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo dates again this year - June 6th - 8th. Registration is open for this year's Fishing Rodeo, once again hosted at Flora-Bama Yacht Club and Flora-Bama Ole River Grill. With 30+ categories for adults and kids, the entry fee is low (just $50 for adults and $25 for kids) and the prizes are grand! There's something for everyone. Additional competitive categories include a Red Snapper Jackpot, King Mackerel Jackpot, Offshore Slam, Trashcan Slam and Speckled Trout divisions. Not fishing, but want to enjoy the weigh-ins? 2025 RED SNAPPER FISHING SEASON:

ALABAMA:

The Marine Resources Division (MRD) of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) announces that Alabama state waters and federal waters will open to private and state-licensed charter vessel anglers for red snapper harvest on Friday, May 23, 2025.

NEW FOR 2025
The season will be open 7 days a week from May 23 until 11:59 p.m. on Monday June 30, 2025. The season will then transition to four-day weekends starting July 4 until the private angler quota is met. The Alabama private angler quota for 2025 is set by NOAA Fisheries and is anticipated to be 664,552 pounds.

“Under state management we have the ability to adapt our red snapper season to meet the needs of anglers that fish in Alabama,” said Chris Blankenship, ADCNR Commissioner. “For 2025, we are opening the season for the entire month of June to give our private anglers and state licensed charter boats better opportunities during the peak of the season. We anticipate a great red snapper season this year that will provide anglers with more opportunities to catch red snapper through early summer and hopefully into the fall.”

Governor Ron DeSantis announced a record-breaking 126-day Gulf Red Snapper recreational season for 2025, the longest season since Florida assumed management of Gulf red snapper. The expanded season includes additional summer and fall fishing days from 2024, offering anglers more opportunities to fish over major holidays such as Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving.

“Florida is the fishing capital of the world—with 4 million licensed anglers and generations of families who enjoy our waters. After setting a record last year, we’re doing it again with the longest Gulf Red Snapper season in state history, giving Floridians and visitors even more time to fish on Florida’s waterways, said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Smart state management of Gulf waters has allowed us to offer these record-breaking opportunities to Floridians year after year.”

The 2025 Gulf red snapper season is open to those fishing from private recreational vessels or charter vessels. The summer season will begin over Memorial Day Weekend, from May 24 – May 26, and reopen June 1 through July 31. The fall season will include the following dates:

The greatest weekend of the year is nearing, the iconic, the one and only, the Gulf coast's greatest beach party...MULLET TOSS! Always the last full weekend of April, this event brings in thousands of people to celebrate together and that's right, toss fish. Patrons gather around a 200 foot long course to watch participants sign up to grab a mullet and throw it as far as you can. The contest is simple, but the weekend is anything but..... think a three day long party filled with sunshine, sand, cocktails (bushwackers of course), live music, bikini and hot body contests, debauchery and oh the lifelong memories you'll never forget, or maybe you will.

This iconic three-day event draws participants and spectators from around the world to see who can throw a mullet fish the farthest from Florida towards the Alabama state line. This unique and quirky competition is a spectacle you won't want to miss!

What an incredible day on the sand at our Beach Run for America’s Warriors! This year, we had the honor of recognizing Sgt. Maj. James G. ‘Ryan’ Sartor, and we are beyond grateful to his family for joining us. Each year, Flora-Bama donates 100% of registration fees for this race back to Special Operations Warrior Foundation. This soft sand run, gives participants the option to run the half marathon that goes into Florida or the 5k that goes into Alabama. This year, we raised over $12,000 for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation and have donated over $100,000 since the inception of the event. Sgt. Maj. James G. “Ryan” Sartor, 40, a Special Forces company sergeant major from Teague, Texas, and assigned to 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), died, July 13, 2019, during combat operations in Faryab Province, Afghanistan. Sartor was born, Sept. 23, 1978. He joined the U.S. Army, June 2001 and was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division as an infantryman. He completed the Special Forces Qualification Course and was assigned to 10th SFG (A) in 2005. He deployed to Iraq as an infantryman in 2002, and as a Green Beret assigned to 2nd Battalion, 10th SFG (A) in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010. He also deployed to Afghanistan with 10th SFG (A) in 2017 and 2019.

NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship Returns to Gulf Shores

National Collegiate Beach Volleyball Returns to the Gulf Coast

The 2025 National Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship will be returning to familiar shores. Originally set to take place in Huntington Beach, California, the tournament has been relocated to Gulf Shores, Alabama, and will be held from May 2-4.

The decision to move the championship was made mutually by the NCAA and the Orange County Sports Commission, which had worked alongside Long Beach State to secure Huntington Beach’s host bid. The relocation comes in light of ongoing recovery efforts in Los Angeles County, located approximately 50 miles north of Huntington Beach.

"Our focus is currently on ensuring hotel rooms and other resources remain dedicated to supporting those in need," said Anthony Brenneman, executive director of the Orange County Sports Commission.

Gulf Shores is no stranger to the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship, having hosted the event every year since its inaugural tournament in 2016. The University of Alabama at Birmingham and Alabama's Beaches Sports & Events will take on hosting duties for this year’s event, working to maintain the high standards set in previous years.

"We are fortunate to have an alternative site in Gulf Shores that beach volleyball student-athletes, coaches, and fans are familiar with," said Ashley Armstrong, chair of the NCAA Women’s Beach Volleyball Committee and deputy athletics director at Loyola Marymount University. "Relocating the championship is in the best interest for all involved."

The Gulf Shores community has welcomed the return of the championship with open arms.

"When we were approached about this opportunity, we felt confident that we could provide a similar championship experience as in past years," said Beth Gendler, president and CEO of Alabama’s Beaches Sports & Events. "Our community is excited to have the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship return to Gulf Shores."

A Long-Term Future in Gulf Shores

The relocation announcement comes shortly after news that Gulf Shores will host the National Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship from 2027 through 2031. During that period, the venue is set to undergo capital improvements, including expanded spectator stadium seating, additional hospitality space, and upgrades to broadcasting infrastructure.

Alabama Beaches Sports & Events has also committed to increasing marketing resources and enhancing the student-athlete experience to ensure a top-tier competition environment.

Despite the 2025 relocation, Huntington Beach remains on track to host the 2026 championship.

"Orange County is proud to host the future championship at Huntington Beach, with its world-famous backdrop, which will provide an unparalleled experience for the athletes, coaches, and fans," Brenneman said. "We look forward to showing the NCAA beach volleyball community a positive championship experience."

Orange Beach, Ala. – ( OBA ) – The Flora-Bama Lounge is set to host its 31st Annual Super Chili Bowl Cook-Off on Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Flora-Bama Tent. This event celebrates culinary creativity and serves as a fundraiser for Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society, with 100% of the proceeds donated to these causes.

On the day of the event, setup will occur between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., with cooking commencing at 10 a.m. Teams must prepare a minimum of eight gallons of chili on-site, ensuring enough for both judging and public sampling. Pre-cooking of ingredients is prohibited, and all items will be inspected before cooking. Flora-Bama will provide tables, bowls, spoons, napkins, and crackers, while teams are responsible for their own cooking equipment and ingredients. Participants must be at least 21 years old, and no outside alcoholic beverages are permitted on the premises.

For attendees wishing to savor the diverse chili offerings, an all-inclusive ticket priced at $25 grants unlimited samples, one draft PBR or bottled water, and one People's Choice ticket, available until supplies last. Additional People's Choice tickets can be purchased for $1 each. Tickets will be sold at the Flora-Bama Tent entrance beginning at 10 a.m. on the day of the event.

Prizes will be awarded in several categories:

Here we’ve taken inspiration from one of our all-time favorite salad dressings—ranch—and used it in both its dry and pourable forms to crank up the flavor of classic fried shrimp. Bottled ranch dressing goes into the wet ingredients, while dry ranch seasoning goes in the cornmeal dredge, yielding a double whammy of ranch flavor along with an excellent crunch factor. Vegetable oil, for frying
1 cup plain yellow cornmeal
1/4 cup self-rising flour
1 tsp. kosher salt
1/2 tsp. black pepper, plus more for garnish
1 (1-oz.) envelope ranch dressing mix, divided
1/2 cup bottled ranch dressing (such as Hidden Valley), plus more for serving
1/2 cup whole milk
1 large egg
1 lb. jumbo peeled, deveined raw shrimp, tail-on
Chopped fresh dill

Directions

Pour oil to a depth of 2 inches in a large Dutch oven; heat over medium-high until a deep-fry thermometer registers 325°F.
Meanwhile, whisk together cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, and 2 tablespoons of the ranch dressing mix in a shallow bowl until well combined; set aside. Whisk together bottled ranch dressing, milk, egg, and remaining 2 teaspoons ranch mix in a medium bowl until well combined. Working in batches, dip shrimp in milk mixture, allowing excess liquid to drip off. Press shrimp into cornmeal mixture, turning to coat all sides. Transfer to a baking sheet; repeat with remaining shrimp.
Working in batches, add about 6 breaded shrimp to hot oil; fry, turning occasionally, until golden brown and cooked through, about 2 minutes. Remove from oil using a slotted spoon; transfer to a wire rack set over a rimmed baking sheet. Repeat process with remaining shrimp, adjusting heat as needed to maintain temperature. Serve with additional ranch dressing, and garnish with dill and pepper.

The 11th Annual 2024 Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo (FBFR) is set to take place June 7th-9th. This is a multi-species tournament that welcomes anglers of all skill levels to compete for prizes. The event is held at the Flora-Bama Ole River Grill, across the street from the Flora-Bama Lounge, on the Alabama-Florida state line.
